The secret to building a $39k/mo business
Jordan O’Connor launched an automation tool for Poshmark about 5 years ago.
Now it’s pulling $39,000 in monthly revenue
He recently revealed the secret to his success:
if I just told you about my product’s revenue growth – it would be a wild story. Starting from “nothing” and growing it to where it is now. What a dream.
What’s not told, is the years and years of learning valuable skills required to pull something like that off.
Any real success takes a lot of time, and chances are, if you’re not what you consider “successful” you may not have been doing it long enough.
YouTube to pay $100M for short videos
YouTube Shorts is YouTube’s version of TikTok. Videos are 60 seconds or less. See examples on this page.
YouTube pouring millions into this is similar to Snapchat pouring millions into their Spotlight feature last year. As reported in the newsletter a few months back, some people were earning big money via Spotlight, including one woman banking $500,000 for a video of her sister deep frying a turkey
So if you’re looking for a way to break into YouTube, Shorts might be the ticket.
The Most Interesting Marketer in the World
According to one YouTube video, his name is Gabe Whaley, and he’s the founder of MSCHF.
Some of the viral products MSCHF has come out with:
- Jesus Shoes, with holy water in the sole
- CussCollar, translates dog barks into curses
- Finger on the App, $20k prize to touch a screen for 70 hours
Back in 2019, Gabe discussed his creative process on the Prehype podcast. Worth a listen to get your own marketing juices flowing.
Brainiac also has a good case study on MSCHF (use promo code EBIZFACTS for a 25% discount).
Free review of your Amazon listing
If you’re selling a product on Amazon, Amazing at Home offers a free review of your listing to help boost sales.
Heard about it on this episode of the eCom Exits podcast
The host of that podcast โ Nate Ginsburg โ built and sold a $1 million Amazon business, and shared his story here.
Roast My Landing Page
Amazing at Home uses the free offer mentioned above as a lead gen for their $99/month Mastermind Membership.
Roast My Landing Page skips the free offer and charges ยฃ149 ($210) for a 20-minute video analysis of your SaaS landing page.
Oliver Meakings, the guy behind RMLP, writes that he’s been offering that productized service for a year, and it’s gone pretty well:
I generated about ยฃ20,000 in roast revenue, and another ยฃ50,000 of freelance marketing work from clients who discovered me through being roasted.
That works out to $99,000 total revenue, and he reports about $14,000 in expenses
Oliver’s write-up is worth a read if you’re considering offering a productized service โ pay special attention to how much he tweaked his offer and marketing to find what worked best โ or if you want to improve your landing page conversions.
How to find the next big thing
Steph Smith from Trends (reviewed here) breaks down her clever research process in this thread
An example of an opportunity she spotted recently:
Hard kombucha.
In grocery stores in California, there’s an entire section for it. In Florida, I can’t find it if I try. That won’t be the case in 5 years.
And for the rest of the world? There’s almost no search volume. So much room to capitalize.
If you’re already focused on a niche or industry, you could use Steph’s research process to spot emerging trends and/or find topics to cover on your blog/podcast/whatever.

Don’t buy stuff, buy cash flow
This article is a good reminder to think twice before spending money on stuff that generates ongoing expenses, like a car or a house
Better to spend money on stuff that generates cash flow, like an established business or a nice rental property.
When you purchase future cash flow you become wealthy. When you purchase future debt, you become poor.
Of course it’s not always as simple as that, but you get the idea.
The Einstein of Computer Science
A recent episode of Cautionary Tales told the story of Claude Shannon, the so-called Einstein of computer science and the inventor of the world’s first wearable computer, which he used to cheat at roulette in a Vegas casino back in 1961.
The episode describes how Shannon never stayed focused on one thing for long. Maybe he would have made more significant contributions to the world if he had been less scattered… or maybe his lack of focus is what made him so brilliant in the first place
Indeed, there is evidence that having serious hobbies is correlated with greater career success…
Compared to other scientists, Nobel laureates are at least twenty-two times more likely to partake as an amateur actor, dancer, magician, or other type of performer.
Nationally recognized scientists are much more likely than other scientists to be musicians, sculptors, painters, printmakers, woodworkers, mechanics, electronics tinkerers, glassblowers, poets, or writers, of both fiction and nonfiction. (source)
It’s easy to believe the Elon Musk narrative that you need to work 80 hours per week to change the world. But there’s a good argument to be made that you’ll deliver better results with less work and more “distraction.”
Just be sure to choose your distractions wisely
